"Ted" Schoonmaker Served With Fifth New Jersey Regiment on Mexican Border, Then Got Commission at Officers Training School For Service in France - John P. Anderson, Former Hackensack Boy, Missing in Action- Son of Artist Newell, of Leonia, Killed in Action.

Hackensack was again rudely shocked this morning when news received from Washington announcing that Capt. Stephen T, Schoonmaker had been killed in action on October 26.

.....Captain Schoonmaker was a son of A. G. Schoonmaker, of River-road, Teaneck, but as he had lived in Hakcensack for several years "Ted" was regarded as a Heckensack boy. The family moved to Hackensack from Arcola, and for a considerable time "Ted" was employed as a clerk in the local District Court. He was engaged in the automobile business in Brooklyn when the Mexican Border trouble started and reenlisted in Company G and served on the border as sergeant. He had first joined Company G in 1912.

Capt. Schoonmaker was on duty with his company at Passaic when he left for Officers Training School at Fort Myer, Va., and succeeded in getting a commission as First Lieutenant. He left for France early in 1917 for further instruction.

It is said he was premoted to Captain in the 101st Infantry a few months ago following his citation for bravery.

Capt. Schoonmaker was well known in the younger social circles, and was justly popular. He was full of good nature and won the admiration of the soldiers under him.

He is survived by his father, two brothers, and two sisters.
